Kia’s Story is Proof That Passion Makes Perfect
Graduate Spotlight: Meet Kia Carter
We sat down with Kia, a dedicated graduate of our Dental Assisting Program, whose journey shows how the right mentor and a lot of hard work can launch a fulfilling career in dentistry.
What sparked your interest in Dental Assisting?
“My favorite Dental Hygienist made me fall in love with dentistry,” Kia shared. “We always had amazing dental appointments together—she’d teach me, show me the instruments, and explain what she was doing. That made every visit exciting and inspired me to follow in her footsteps.”
Favorite dental procedure to assist with?
“Sinus lifts!” Kia said without hesitation. “I find them fascinating because they’re so precise and they set the foundation for implants. Being a part of creating a healthy smile from the ground up is so rewarding.”
What makes Kia smile?
“It’s always the patients. I love hearing their stories, learning about their lives, and seeing them open up and feel comfortable in the chair. Building those connections is what makes every day special.”
Where has your journey taken you since graduating?
“After graduation, I moved to Charlotte, NC, and landed my first dental assisting job at a general dentist’s office in Rock Hill, SC. That’s where I learned everything—I had an amazing doctor who taught me how to be a great assistant,” Kia explained.
“But I didn’t stop there. I moved on to an oral surgery office, working right alongside a surgeon. I learned all about anesthesia and surgical procedures, and I became ACLS certified and DAANCE certified. After two years in surgery, I transitioned into orthodontics, where I’m continuing to grow.”
Where are you now?
Kia is currently an Orthodontic Assistant in Charlotte, NC. “I love being part of a team that transforms patients’ smiles and confidence.” Kia shared.
What did you love most about the Dental Assisting Program?
“It was the camaraderie. My classmates and I pushed each other to do our best and make it through together. We built bonds that made all the late nights and studying worth it.”
Any advice to future dental assistants?
Kia says it best:
“Shadow at different offices, get a feel for the field, and then just go for it! Dentistry is a rewarding career with endless opportunities to expand your knowledge. You’ll never stop learning.”
