Shelby’s Career Journey
What were you doing before becoming a Dental Assistant?
I graduated from high school early and went directly into a winter dental assisting program. As a young adult I already had a passion for all things dental. By the time my fellow classmates were graduating I was already working as a dental assistant.
What inspired you to attend a dental assisting program?
As a child I always enjoyed going to the dentist. Dr. Johnston and Dr. Henley were my childhood dentists. Their office was such a fun place to visit and it absolutely influenced my decision to pursue a dental career.
What advice do you have for anyone thinking of entering the dental field?
Dental offices are forever evolving, so think of yourself as a life long learner. Be willing to try new things. Teamwork makes the dream work. Always be willing to lend a hand, but also don’t be afraid to ask for a help.
Explain your career path since entering the dental field.
I’ve been a dental assistant since 2016. I’m currently an assistant at Norge Dental and also an instructor for Today’s Dentist Assisting School.
What do you enjoy most about being an instructor for Today’s Dentist Assisting School?
I truly enjoy being a part of helping students work towards their future careers. It’s exciting because I can relate to students that are passionate and thriving doing what they love. Watching a student fall in love with the dental field is such a rewarding journey.
